My Favorite Country Songs

I love Country music. Old school or present day, it doesn’t matter, I love it all. Growing up in my house, country music was more than just a choice on the radio dial, it was a religion. As far as my dad was concerned, Merle Haggard was the fourth part of the Trinity. There was the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit and Merle.

Many mornings I would wake up to the sound of steel guitars and fiddles filling the air. My daddy had quite a collection of country albums. His favorites consisted of legends such as Jim Reeves, Marty Robins, Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline.

And let us not forget the vital role that Hee-Haw played in deepening my love for country music. Over the years, I was able to watch many country stars as they graced our television screen on Saturday nights along with Grandpa and the Hee-Haw Honeys. As I write this, I fondly remember sitting in the floor of our living room watching all the great country artists. Conway Twitty singing “Hello Darlin” and of course one of the classic duets of Dolly Parton and Porter Waggoner. I have to admit that I was a much older youngster before I realized that Hee-Haw was a variety show. I thought it was a weekly documentary on all of our friends and neighbors.

I was asked once why I love country music so much and I think Trace Adkins answers it best, “Cause they are songs about me.” Country music portrays the life of the working man. Not only that, country music gives you what no other genre of music can. Only in a country song can you lose your wife, kids, house and dog in just three minutes. Yet, somehow, you get to keep your pickup truck.

Country music has changed over the years. Greats such as Merle Haggard, George Jones and Waylon Jennings have given way to the new household names like Toby Keith, Brad Paisley, Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood. However, there remains one thing constant, I still love country music.

I would like to share with you ten of my favorite country songs. They are in no particular order and, depending on the mood I am in, they are likely to change at any given moment. I have reached back a few years and pulled some from the closet of yesterday. I hope you enjoy the selection.

10. Cross My Heart

Artist: George Strait

Favorite part:

I cross my heart and promise to
Give all I've got to give to make all your dreams come true.
In all the world you'll never find a love as true as mine.

9. Mommas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys

Artists: Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson

Favorite part:

Them that don't know him won't like him and them that do,
Sometimes won't know how to take him.
He ain't wrong, he's just different but his pride won't let him,
Do things to make you think he's right.

8. Are the Good Times Really Over?

Artist: Merle Haggard

Favorite Part:

Stop rolling down hill
Like a snowball headed for hell
Stand up for the flag
And let's all ring The Liberty Bell

Let's make the Ford and a Chevy
That'll still last ten years
Like they should
'Cause the best of the free life
Is still yet to come
An the good times ain't over for good.

7. Not As Good As I Once Was

Artist: Toby Keith

Favorite part:

I ain't as good as I once was
I got a few years on me now
But there was a time back in my prime
When I could really lay it down
And if you need some love tonight
Then I might have just enough
I ain't as good as I once was
But I'm as good once as I ever was

6. Good Hearted Woman

Artist: Waylon Jennings

Favorite part:

She's a good-hearted woman in love with a good-timin' man
She loves him in spite of his ways that she don't understand
Through teardrops and laughter, they'll pass through this world hand-in-hand,
A good-hearted woman loving her good timing man

This big dog will fight
When you rattle his cage
And you'll be sorry that you messed with
The U.S. of A.
'Cause we'll put a boot in your ass
It's the American way

4. El Paso

Artist: Marty Robins

Favorite part:

Felina is strong and I rise where I've fallen,
Though I am weary I can't stop to rest.
I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle.
I feel the bullet go deep in my chest.

From out of nowhere Felina has found me,
Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side.
Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for,
One little kiss and Felina, good-bye.

3. For The Good Times

Artist: Ray Price

Favorite part:

Lay your head,
Upon my pillow
Hold your warm and tender body
Close to mine
Hear the whisper of the raindrops
Blowing soft, against the window
And make believe you love me,
One more time,
For the good times

2. When We Make Love

Artist: Alabama

Favorite part:

Watching you make your little moves
Well I can tell it’s gonna be a long night
All day long, we keep holding on
It couldn’t be any better than this
I got it all at my finger tips.

1. He Stopped Loving Her Today

Artist: George Jones

Favorite part:

He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

(Spoken)
You know she came to see him one last time
Oh and we all wondered if she would
And it kept running through my mind
This time he's over her for good

this felt almost like reading about my own childhood! your favorites and mine and almost identical!! i loved this!!! and your right about the Trace Atkins song..."there singing songs about me"!!! hahahahahaha!!! today's country, some of it i like and some of it...i wouldn't care if i ever heard again! Carrie Underwood is cute and i believe a good person, but seems to me like she screams more than she sings...just my opinion! she could learn a lot from Loretta, Tammy, Reba, and Tanya Tucker.

I enjoyed this very much!!!! two thumbs up my friend!!!

Mischelle loves Country and I'm alot Rock n Roll. But I have grown to love Country music. The Video of Johnny and June is kinda like Mischelle and I. Everyone should see the movie about Johnny Cash called "Walk The Line". We wrote a song last night called"We're Broke..We're Broke..We're B-R-O-K-E"

its amazing how much of our childhood is defined by music. This hub brings back some memories so clearly i can almost touch them. Certain ones you chose defines Daddy so well, don't you think? Thanks I needed this!(:

Lecie 2 years ago

all of my life my dad had country on the radio. no one was allowed to change the station. if he was at work my sisters and i would play our cassettes. heaven forbid if we forgot to switch the setting back to the radio. i was too young for "punishment." my sisters however had to face his abusive wrath. like you said country music was a religion to him and still is. since watching how angry he would get, toward my sisters over something as silly as forgetting to turn a switch, i never really cared for country. i thought to myself, if you act like that then what good is the music. i can listen to a few select country artists occasionaly. for the most part my radio is tuned to the oldie station. i'm glad i'm not the only one that grew up with a country music junkie for a father. thanks for sharing. this hub brought back a few good memories.

Samboiam, I love all types of music and I have spent many hours listening to most of those artists. Good hub.

U Neek 2 years ago

Yes, it was Hee Haw at our house and the Grand Ole Opry and the Porter Waggoner Show. You struck a chord, no pun intended, with this line, "Let's make the Ford and a Chevy

That'll still last ten years," as I'm back to the dealership for the 15th or maybe 20th time today to try and get the auto maker to do the right thing by the lemon I bought just a year and a half ago. :( Excellent hub!

I grew up with Country and Western too as my mother was a fan but it is not a type of music that I usually chose to listen probably becasue I wanted to listen to something else when I was younger! I must listen to some of the new household names which have passed me by. Amber:)

Enjoyed it. The George Jones song always reminds me of Dad after Mom died, when he died. He just didn't have much will to live after she passed, and that song always makes me cry. I love Toby Keith's "New Orleans," and "How do you like me now?" I love all music, from classical to rap, and country speaks to the sourthern part of me. great hub.

Great Hub - nice classics. I like Kenny Rogers - an old song called "through the years". Also, there's a Country singer who sang "I hope you dance". I watched it on a country music channel and can't remember her name. Do you know her?

I enjoyed this Hub. Thanks for the Lyrics too. :)

That's one heck of a good top ten list. I've played the guitar since I was nine years old, and looking back, I think Hee Haw had as much to do with that as anything. I loved watching Roy Clark do his thang. He's still one of the best ever. I wasn't a true fan of Buck Owens until Dwight Yoakum showed me why I should be. I get it now. And of course, there were all the Hee Haw hotties, somehow disguised in a way that made it OK for a young kid like me to watch them even though I was going to be heading off to Sunday School just a few hours later.

Thanks for the memories. All 10 songs you mentioned are a cut above.

samboiam profile image

samboiam Hub Author 2 years ago

Stan, thanks for the comment. I am really surprised at the positive response this hub has received. I did a hub on Carrie Underwood that was not very successful at all. I was quite nervous when I did this one not knowing what kind of response I would get.

I do not know if Country music has had a better musician than Roy Clark.

I am glad you enjoyed the list.

Growing up, I didn't care for country music, although my dad was a huge fan, but why wouldn't he be, he was from Oklahoma. So even though I didn't embrace the music then, I sure came to love it as I grew up. My late hubby was a huge fan as well.

One thing I love about country music is that no matter what you're going through, or what you're feeling, you can find a song that fits. Somehow, they nail every possible emotion/scenario.

I love this line: Only in a country song can you lose your wife, kids, house and dog in just three minutes. Yet, somehow, you get to keep your pickup truck.

That is so true, and so funny!

Thanks for sharing and bringing me back to some fond memories.

Just came across your hub today. Good to see mention of some music that is outside of what is being overplayed on the radio now. As far as soundtracks go, it is tough to beat the one for Pure Country. If yuou get time, check out some of the music coming out of the Texas scene like Randy Rogers Band or Jason Boland and the Stragglers.
